The Master
Another important idea from the Fourth Way is stressed while you have your head in the vice of self remembering. They point out that inside your mind there are a lot of different people who alternate taking control of your ship and steering this way and that over your ocean of life. You get up in the morning and continue your day hypnotized by the illusionary time line life you’re leading. This is your context. The content of your mind moves from one “I” to the next “I” to the next who designate themselves as the same consistent master as every other “I.” Maybe occasionally they are the same and maybe not, but what matters is there is never a permanent captain and so your ship sails on and on toward perfect storms that somehow keep repeating themselves.
Your personality is not your essence.
These Fourth Wayfarers also teach that there is something within every person that is consistent, deeper and true. . . your essence. While different personality “I’s” guide you day to day in different ways, your essence is really who you are. It is as if you are a peach and the seed within is your essence.
When you are able to see that you are a reactive mechanical person and you stop, then you begin to die before you die. The “you” that dies is the constantly changing montage of false captains who have been steering you this way and that. As these false identities become exposed, they provide fertile ground for the seed, your essence, the seed that is really you, to grow.
Soon, in your day to day life, awaken feeling alive, refreshed, viewing a new world.
You must die before you die.
